For the past 15 years, I’ve been cranking out massive Styrofoam sculptures—starting with hundreds of pieces for Mardi Gras and beyond. Spent my first decade at Kern Studios, building foam creations for Universal Studios Orlando, the NFL, Chick-fil-A, the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade, and a bunch more. My work has popped up everywhere, from the Times-Picayune and New Orleans Advocate to Garden & Gun, plus features on The Travel Channel, History Channel, PBS, and local news like WWLTV and WGNO.
In 2019, I jumped into the film industry and joined IATSE, bringing my sculpting skills to the big screen. Since then, I’ve worked on projects with Amazon Studios, Marvel, Sony Pictures, and Walt Disney Studios—turns out making giant, over-the-top things translates pretty well to Hollywood.
“Alex Sherrod is one of the finest young sculptors working in Carnival today. His best work recalls the splendor of 19th Century Mardi Gras, and my personal favorite remains the great figure of Yama which rolled in the Rex Parade of 2014.”
“Sherrod and Kern agree that it [Digital Fabrication] will only serve to enhance creativity and bring in more capital and resources to allow that creativity to expand.”
“He’s one of only a few artists whom krewe captains trust to make their floats”
“ artist Alex Sherrod led the free programs that included making shoe box floats, and later, Mardi Gras masks”
